Bump bump bump..

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.” Albert Einstein

I saw this quote the other day and it drew me back to the first time I read the Software Project Survival Guide by Steve McConnell. This book was mandatory reading when I was at Teleca and it really is the benchmark for good software project practice – independent of which model you actually use, waterfall, agile, etc. – you still do all the same stuff.

Mainly though, it was the introductory illustration that was burned in my mind:

“Here he is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it…”

There is always more work than time allows. Or to put it in another context, there is never time to go to the gym – you have to make time to exercise – knowing that you’ll feel better and get more done if you do. The same is true of software development.. make time to fix the process – decide what you will prioritise, what you will do and what you will not do – and you’ll be amazed at how successful you are.
